The funding positions of US pension plans have fallen to historic lows during August due to simultaneously falling equity markets and interest rates. The August decline pushed the health of pension plans, as measured on a mark-to-market basis, to all-time lows as it erased the modest gains made in July.

Some of the country's largest employers are beginning to consider the impact of new statutory rules from 2012 that require them to auto-enrol millions of extra employees into workplace pension schemes, with 41% of employers saying that they are ‘likely’ or ‘highly likely’ to reduce future benefits in existing and in new schemes relative to existing ones, to meet the additional cost of these newly pensioned employees.
